• Take lots of deep breaths to relax you and clear the toxins from your lungs
• Avoid alcohol and bars while you are trying to quit. Drinking can trigger the urge to smoke
• Drink lots of water!

SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTIONS...
The San Juan County Public Health Service is actively involved in helping individuals, families and groups in San Juan County to prevent alcohol and drug abuse and addiction, and to find recovery resources.
We provide the following services:

Reconnecting Youth
An educational partnership with the Silverton School District which provides 80 hours a year of substance abuse prevention instruction for students in grades 9-12.  This program focuses on communication, self esteem development, conflict resolution, and peer support. 
The instructor for this program is Karen Hoskin, MPH.

Life Skills Training
An educational partnership with the Silverton School District which provides 10 hours each year of life skill and substance abuse prevention instruction for students in grades 3-8.  This program helps younger students to develop the language and skills necessary to resist peer pressure and avoid high-risk situations.  The curriculum also focuses on self esteem development, communication skills and problem solving.
The instructor for this program is Miriam Butler, MPH.

Resource and Referral
The San Juan County Nursing Service has printed brochures and materials available at our office (1315 Snowden Street) on a variety of drugs and controlled substances, their affects, risks and recovery.  We are also able to provide referrals for assistance, counseling, treatment and support.

The Silverton Youth Center
One of the most effective ways to keep kids off drugs is to give them safe and fun alternatives. The Silverton Youth Center, located on the second floor of the Silverton Visitor's Center(414 Greene Street) provides an supervised, interactive environment for kids, complete with the activities they enjoy.
